Raum für Materialerfahrung
am Legiendamm 16, 10179 Berlin

The Raum für Materialerfahrung is a new space of the Museum Haus des Papiers. It is a place where materials, craft processes, research, and artistic experimentation come together.
The space exists between different realms. It is a studio, makerspace, and laboratory at the same time – open to all disciplines that engage with it. Here, art, material research, craftsmanship, and social exchange come together to create an open space for collective learning, exploration, and experimentation. With every encounter, not only knowledge grows, but also the ability to rethink materials, processes, and connections in new ways.
The focus is not on the finished work, but on the journey towards it: examining materials, discovering tools, testing techniques, asking questions, developing ideas, and sharing experiences.

A Space That Grows
The Raum für Materialerfahrung is conceived as an open-ended development project. New materials, tools, and fields of research emerge from the ideas and collaborations of the people who work here.
The following overview presents the current state of a place that is intentionally evolving. None of these areas exist in isolation: materials move between workshop, laboratory, and printmaking. Conversations become experiments, research becomes exhibition, and craftsmanship becomes the foundation for new artistic inquiries.
Step by step, a place is taking shape where knowledge is not simply collected, but collectively developed and kept in motion.
Education
Material Library
More than 250 different paper qualities, fibre samples, material specimens, manufacturer collections, and growing archives form the foundation for comparisons, experiments, and new material developments.

Sensory Exploration
Book and Object
Bookbinding, folding, stitching, embossing, and object development combine traditional techniques with contemporary design.

Tech
Documentation and Archive
Professional scanning and camera equipment, light tables, and a continuously growing documentation archive support research and development processes and make them traceable over time.

Design
Druck und Grafik
From printing presses and fine art inkjet printing to cutting plotters, this is a place where printmaking, reliefs, embossing, editions, and experimental surfaces are created.

Textiles and Screen Printing
Paper moves beyond its familiar boundaries and encounters textiles, colours, and screen-printing techniques. This area is also growing step by step.

Sensory Exploration
Papierwerkstatt
Microscopes, basic laboratory equipment, pigment development, plant-based dyes, and material analyses open up new perspectives on paper, fibres, colours, and materials.

Design
Digital Tools
Professional fine art printing, colour management, scanning technologies, cutting plotters, and future 3D printing complement traditional craft techniques.
