In Call and Response, Gisoo Kim creates a floating installation of 15 vessels made of sewn photographs. Each vessel is composed of photographic fragments of human figures—visible individually, yet connected by delicate threads. The construction appears at first enigmatic, almost archaeological, as if one were looking at a group of artifacts preserving traces of a past or future form of living together.
The vessels represent the social spaces we shape through our relationships. Through sewing as an artistic act, Kim expresses the social in a subtle, almost bodily way—connection is made literally visible. The taut surfaces, crisscrossed with threads, evoke lines of communication, mutual dependence, and the fragile balance of our societies. The title refers to a principle from music and language in which every utterance provokes an answer.

Gisoo Kim was born in Seoul, South Korea, and now lives and works in Germany. After studying fine arts in Seoul, she completed a master’s degree at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg. Her works have been shown in numerous exhibitions across Europe and Asia. In her artistic practice, she combines photography with textile techniques, exploring the transitions between image, object, and social space.
